Achit Lake

Achit Lake
Achit Nuur

west Mongolia

Achit Lake is the largest freshwater shallow lake in the Mongolian Altai Range’s Khovd River basin in western Mongolia. It is located on the boundary of the provinces of Uvs and Bayan Ulgii. The lake is 28 kilometers long, 16 kilometers broad, and ten meters deep, and it is located at 1,464 meters above sea level between Kharkhiraa Uul and Turgen Uul in Uvs aimag, western Mongolia.  It has beautiful sunsets and sunrises, as well as excellent fishing. A diverse range of water bird groups can be seen on the lake. Steppes cover the shore, which is primarily hilly but swampy in the northwest and northeast. Many aquatic birds, many of which are listed in the Mongolian and IUCN Red Books, use this area as a nesting and resting habitat. More than 1% of the biogeographic population of Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus), Black Storks (Ciconia Nigra), and Ruddu Shelducks can be found at the site (Tadorna ferruginea). The lakes are home to a number of indigenous fish species. From November through May, the lake is frozen.
