Boon Tsagaan Nuur

Tamir River

south Mongolia

In the huge inter-mountain depression between the Khangai and Gobi-Altai ranges, a chain of big and small saline lakes sits at the foot of the Gobi-Altai Mountain Range. They’re shallow, with a saucer-shaped depth profile, and their size varies a lot from season to season and year to year. Some years, they may entirely dry out. They all get their water from rivers that originate in the Khangai Mountains, and the Gobi-Altai does not provide a constant supply.
The Boon Tsagaan Nuur, Tatsiin Tsagaan Nuur, Adgiin Tsagaan Nuur, and Orog Nuur are the main lakes. In the summer, as the lake diminishes, it exposes patches of salt marsh, particularly to the east of the lake.
Boon Tsagaan Nuur lake is located in Bayankhongor Province’s south-west corner, at the mouth of the Baidrag River, at the foot of the Gobi-Altai Mountain Range.
