This mountain, as one of Genghis Khan’s sacred locations, is rich in archaeological heritage, with archaeologists identifying over 800 burial sites. In the Khentii province, the mountain is part of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, which was established in 1992. Because it was first recognized as sacred by Genghis Khan, this peak is considered Mongolia’s most sacred mountain. The Khan was pursued by competing tribes and hid in the Burkhan Khaldun Mountains, according to The Secret History of the Mongols.
