Ganga Nuur is a freshwater lake located 11 kilometers southeast of Dariganga soum’s center, on the northeast fringe of the Moltsog Els sand dune belt in Sukhbaatar province. The lake covers 4 square kilometers and is part of a 288-square-kilometer state-protected area that includes not only the Ganga Lake but also the Moltsog Els sand dunes, Lake Kholboo, Uizen, and Sumt. Ramsar sites include Lake Ganga and its adjoining wetlands. Ganga Lake and its adjacent lakes are located in eastern Mongolia, amid a terrain that combines marshes, steppe, and sand dunes. Dariganga, the lake district, is located in the wind-scoured plains of extinct volcanoes. It’s critical for breeding and resting water birds like the White-napped Crane (Grus vipio), Swan Goose (Anser cygnoides), and Great Bustard (Otis tarda), which are all listed as vulnerable or endangered in the IUCN Red Book.
