The 4,4-million-hectare national park is located in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert, near the Chinese border in the south-western region of the country. The UN has designated the region as an International Biosphere Reserve. The park is located in a secluded location that is difficult to access. Desert and desert steppe dominate the area, with a few mountains exceeding 1200 meters and some springs and oasis. The park is home to a staggering number of key populations of endangered animal and plant species. The Great Gobi is one of the last remaining safe havens for threatened, endangered, and critically endangered creatures such as the wild Bactrian camel, the Gobi bear , snow leopard, argali wild sheep, and Mongolian wild ass. After an exhaustive DNA investigation, scientists have recognized the wild camel as a distinct species from all other camel species.
