Great Lakes Depressions

Western Lake
Lakes Mongolia

west mongolia

A territory spanning over 40.000 square kilometers, stretching from Uvs to Khovd aimag. The Altai Mountain Range separates the Great Lake Depression from the Altai Mountain Range to the west. Melting snow from the Altai Mountain falls into the depression’s lakes in the spring. Because they don’t have access to the sea, those salt lakes turn into massive evaporation basins. The Great Lakes Depression is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and a globally important wetland region for migratory birds.
