Ikh Bogd, the highest peak in the Gobi – Altai Mountain Range, reaches a height of 3,957 meters above sea level. Severe earthquakes struck Ikh Bogd in 1957, opening up an extraordinarily long surface crack (the Bogd Fault) and causing substantial deformation across a large area. During a huge earthquake of magnitude 11, one peak of the mountains collapsed, and boulders filled the valley where the river flowed, resulting in the formation of two lovely fresh water lakes (known as turquoise and azur) separated by massive rocks.

Excellent trekking routes lead to the lakes from the mountain’s north side.
