west Mongolia

The Khan Khokhii mountain range, which covers 2206 square kilometers and is located in the Zuunkhangai, Undurkhangai, and Tsagaan Khairkhan sums of Uvs province, was designated as a protected area in 2000. The Khan Khokhii mountain range divides the Uvs and Khyargas lake basins and is located deep into the mountain valleys. By slowing the process of desert-steppe zone expansion, the area serves a vital role in maintaining ecological equilibrium. Duulga’s highest point is 2.928 meters above sea level. The mountain peaks are quite flat, with sharp slopes. Glaciers shaped the landscape to some extent. The southern slopes include desert and semi-arid desert flora, whilst the northern slopes have a greater range of vegetation, ranging from steppe to mountain forest (Siberian larch and pine). Musk deer, elk, red deer, and wolves all live in the highlands. Nearby lakes Khyargas and Airag are home to a variety of globally endangered bird species recognized in Mongolia’s Red Book.
