Khyargas Lake

Khyargas Nuur
Khyargas Lake

west Mongolia

The Great Lakes Depressions are a 40.000-square-kilometer region that runs from Uvs to Khovd aimag. The Altai Mountain Range separates the Great Lake Depression from the Altai Mountain Range to the west. Melting snow from the Altai Mountain falls into the depression’s lakes in the spring. Because they don’t have access to the sea, those salt lakes turn into massive evaporation basins.

Khyargas Lake, in the Great Lake Depression area, is an ideal mosquito-free site at any time of year, and its borders are like a pleasant seashore. Locals refer to a 5- to 6-meter-long, 20-meter-high white cliff on the lake’s east coast as Khezuu Khad. Many migratory water birds nest and breed in the spring.
